Cortland’s early history can be traced back to Samuel Bacon, who worked hard to get the settlement off the ground. He originally built a lumber mill, but the rising water led to challenges. In order to fix this, a dam was built back in 1809, and then a larger dam was built later. The area was officially known as Baconsburg, but when it was incorporated in 1873, the name was changed to the village of Cortland. As the village continued to grow, it was eventually reclassified as a city. Today, it’s home to roughly 7,105 people as of the 2020 census.
